Bill Watch

Bill Watch is a service of the IndyBar Legislative Committee. During each week of the legislative session, the IndyBar will distribute an updated report, through the support of Faegre Baker Daniels, to its members indicating the progress and recent actions taken on the bills being monitored by the association.

This was a busy and eventful week at the statehouse as the end of session is nearing.  Yesterday was the last day for Senate bills on third reading in the House and Tuesday was the last day for House bills on third reading in the Senate.  Session meetings grew longer to race to meet these deadlines.

Now that the bills have returned to their house of origin, motions of dissent and concurrence have been filed.  The legislature began the hectic conference committee phase of session on Wednesday.  In these meetings, bills with dissented amendments will be reconciled.  Next week, the legislature will pack in conference committee meetings in anticipation of sine die on Thursday.  In addition to conference committees, the House and Senate will both continue to have session meetings.

The legislature also experienced a change in leadership this week.  Sue Ellspermann’s resignation as Indiana Lieutenant Governor was effective on Wednesday and she presided over the Senate for the last time.  Ellspermann was also honored in the House on Wednesday for her public service.  Yesterday afternoon former state Republican chairman Eric Holcomb was sworn in at the statehouse as the new lieutenant governor.
